Asada Shikki Kogei, a lacquerware studio with nearly a century of history, has long been dedicated to the art of lacquer craftsmanship.
While traditional lacquerware and modern lifestyles may seem somewhat distant, the studio continues to explore new ways to create lacquerware that fits contemporary living.
The pieces are made from zelkova wood, thickly hollowed out to form a structure that naturally rights itself by its own weight.
The slightly rounded base allows the vessel to gently sway for a moment before settling, creating a soothing and calming impression.

The base coating is made with traditional lacquer undercoats, repeatedly applying and polishing rust lacquer (sabi-urushi) about five times to form a strong and durable lacquer film.
It is then finished with a glossy lacquer coating, cured to achieve a refined, elegant appearance.
The technique called “Kagerou-nuri” (literally “heat-haze coating”) is a coined term that combines two methods:
“Bokashi-nuri,” a technique using three brushes to blend boundaries, and “Murakumo-nuri,” which applies soot from Japanese candles.

It also carries the nuance of “sitting” or “relaxing,” expressing a sense of calm and comfort that the vessel brings.
