The “SUWARI Murakumo-nuri” cup, crafted by Asada Shikki Kogei, is a lacquerware piece that beautifully fuses traditional craftsmanship with modern design.
Made from zelkova wood, it features the rare “Murakumo-nuri” technique on its sides—an artisanal method using soot from Japanese candles.

The cup’s surface reveals cloud-like patterns that shift in appearance depending on the angle of light. Over time, its lustrous sheen deepens, allowing you to enjoy the graceful aging of lacquer.
Each piece is hollowed from a thick block of zelkova, and its rounded base lets it gently rock before settling upright—a refined and playful design element.
The durable lacquer coating provides insulation, making it suitable even for warm beverages.

The name “SUWARI” is inspired by the motion of swirling a drink in a glass to let it breathe and enhance its aroma.
It also carries the meaning of “sitting” or “settling,” evoking a sense of calm and comfort—moments of repose shared through the vessel itself.
A perfect piece of traditional craftsmanship that harmonizes with modern life—ideal for daily use or as a thoughtful gift.
