Notices

Asada Shikki Kogei, based in Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa Prefecture, creates tableware that brings the tradition of Yamanaka lacquerware into harmony with modern living.

The “Murakumo Cup” blends the flickering hues and textures of a flame with traditional lacquer techniques, resulting in a casual yet refined design that feels at home in everyday life.

“Murakumo” (literally “gathering clouds”) is a decorative lacquer technique in which, after applying the top coat, soot from a Japanese candle is gently brushed onto the surface as it begins to dry, creating unique patterns resembling dark drifting clouds.

The delicate, wavering appearance—reminiscent of candlelight—is expressed through the Murakumo-nuri technique.
Each piece is handcrafted, so no two patterns are ever the same.
It can be used not only for drinks but also as a dessert cup or soba choko (noodle dipping cup).

While rooted in time-honored tradition, Murakumo-nuri stands out as a distinctly modern form of lacquerware, unmatched in its quiet presence and beauty.

Each cup is carefully finished by hand, offering a smooth, pleasant feel at the lip.
Ideal for everyday use, it also makes a thoughtful gift or a charming addition to gatherings with friends.
