Notices

This beer cup is finished using two traditional techniques of Kagawa lacquerware—Zokoku-nuri and Gotō-nuri—resulting in an elegant and refined piece with a calm, sophisticated appearance.

What is Zokoku-nuri?

Zokoku-nuri is a traditional technique devised by Master Tamano Zokoku, considered the founder of Sanuki lacquerware. The surface is carved and then finished with wiped lacquer (fuki-urushi), followed by pressing makomo (a type of wild grass) into raw lacquer. This process creates a serene and subdued texture.

What is Gotō-nuri?

Gotō-nuri is a celebratory and elegant style. It involves carefully preparing a selected wooden base, coating it with vermilion lacquer, and adding traditional Sanuki patterns using a time-honored technique.

Each cup is meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans.

Finished with natural lacquer, it becomes more vibrant over time with continued use. The lacquer also has antibacterial properties, making it perfectly safe for tableware.

Its smooth rim, excellent insulation, and heat retention make it suitable not only for cold beer but also for enjoying warm drinks like oyuwari (diluted hot sake or spirits).

An exceptional item, ideal for both everyday use and as a heartfelt, meaningful gift.

Nakata Shikki

Kagawa Prefecture

Nakata Lacquerware, which produces Kagawa lacquerware, is a long-established workshop that not only applies lacquer, but also produces the entire product from the wood base up, and creates products with a unique approach called "ishiji-nuri," in which stone powder is applied to the surface. It is a product development that combines traditional techniques that have been handed down in this area for generations with new technology.
